Hello
This is a report from when I visited the National Gallery of Oslo, back in February of this year. I visited Norway to participate in an Erasmus+ project, which is basically a youth exchange in a tiny village in the mountains of Oslo.
The National Gallery moved to a new building in 2021, now part of the National Museum located by the Oslo waterfront. The new space is modern, spacious, and designed to host both classic and contemporary exhibitions. This change allowed the museum to expand its collection and improve the visitor experience compared to the older building. Personally, I felt that I could get lost in there for days, to the magnitude and the quality of the artwork.
During the time I was there, there was three main exhibitions: the permanent exhibition, Yayoi Kusama¡Çs and the Modern Gothic exhibition.
The first floor is dedicated to the permanent exhibition, showcasing Norwegian and European art from various periods. One of the highlights of the collection is Edvard Munch¡Çs famous painting "The Scream," which is displayed alongside other significant works of his, including "Madonna" and "The Dance of Life." The layout of the exhibition allows visitors to follow the progression of Norwegian art, with beautifully curated rooms highlighting different artistic movements and styles.
On the upper floor, there were two temporary exhibitions. The first one was Yayoi Kusama¡Çs installation, which was unlike her usual polka dot style. Instead, the room was filled with tall, glowing pillars arranged in a mirrored space. The combination of mirrors and soft, colorful lights made it feel like stepping into an infinite forest of light.
As you walked around, your reflection merged with the reflections of the pillars, creating a hypnotic and dreamlike effect.
In addition to ¡ÈThe Pillars,¡É the exhibition also featured Yayoi Kusama¡Çs iconic installation, ¡ÈNarcissus Garden.¡É This work consists of hundreds of reflective silver spheres spread across the floor, each one mirroring the space, the viewer, and the other spheres around it. Walking through the installation, you could see yourself from countless angles, creating a sense of self-awareness and connection to the environment.
The name ¡ÈNarcissus Garden¡É refers to the Greek myth of Narcissus, and the piece invites reflection—both literally and metaphorically—on vanity, perception, and the relationship between art and the viewer. The endless reflections felt meditative, and the simplicity of the spheres contrasted beautifully with the more colorful, light-based elements of ¡ÈThe Pillars.¡É
Together, both installations highlighted Kusama¡Çs unique ability to transform space and perception, creating an immersive experience that stayed with you even after leaving the room.
The second temporary exhibition was titled Modern Gothic. It explored how contemporary artists reinterpret gothic themes, combining darkness, fantasy, and symbolism in innovative ways. The mood of this exhibition was much more mysterious and dramatic, with artworks that played with shadow, texture, and emotion.
Overall, visiting the National Gallery was a unique and inspiring experience. The combination of classic masterpieces and modern, interactive installations offered a comprehensive view of art's evolution and its power to evoke emotion and reflection.
